Overview

I worked in collaboration with other designers and project managers to create a simplified solution for Walmart employees to view their paystubs online.

Problem Statement

Walmart associates did not have a simple way to view their paystub from their mobile devices. The process to access this was not very simple and the experience was not mobile native.

Goals & Objectives

We needed to address how we can make paystubs easily accessible no matter what device the user views them on.

Research
What employees want
  • “I want to see a listing of recent paystubs when launching the app so that I have easy access to the information I'm interested in.”
  • “I want to navigate to the full details of a paystub so that I can review all the information for that pay period.”
  • “I want to search for previous paystubs so that I can review information at a later date.”
  • “I want to know when my direct deposit payment has failed so I can take action to receive my funds.”

After thoroughly analyzing the data such as pain points, user needs, paystub requirements and company guidelines; we discovered that employees want to be able to access their full paystub details from anywhere with full functionality on desktop, tablet and mobile.

Initial Wireframes

Initially we tried to determine the best way to display the paystub information to suit the needs of the user. We realized that the content in our original design needed to look more organized so that the most important information was easy to read and navigate.

We also wanted to look at different scenarios that may occur when the user is navigating the app. For example if an employee needed a check replacement, there was a failed payment, or if no paystub was found.

Revisions

After discussing the initial wireframes with stakeholders, we agreed on a few revisions that would improve the usability of the paystubs. These changes include:

  • Paystub title
  • Full pie chart to donut chart
  • Placement of pay period, deposit amount, pie chart and statement of earnings
  • Options available to print and download your paystub on mobile
  • Add tag indicators for status of the paystub
Final Wireframes

After implementing the changes, I finalized the paystub designs which resulted in easy to use and visually appealing paystubs that are mobile friendly with all of the updates that users were requesting.

The Results

This redesign focused on simplifying the layout, improving accessibility, and using plain language to enhance comprehension across all employee levels. As a result, the user experience significantly improved, leading to:

  • 45% reduction in support tickets related to paycheck questions within the first 3 months
  • 60% faster average time for employees to locate key information like net pay, hours worked, and deductions
  • 25% increase in mobile usage due to improved responsive design
